Punk Peace Painting

I'm still finding paintings and prints in nooks and crannies all over the house. I don't know where this one has been hiding, the date says 2006 so it's time it found a home!
I've just added it to my Christmas Studio Sale. It's fun to go back and see what I was working on a couple of years ago...almost everything I painted was quite small, not quite real miniatures but we were all calling them "minis".

I'm happy to say my camera is home and working again. I've just added a couple new pieces to my Christmas Studio Sale.

I had started this Madonna Icon several months ago and somehow it got tucked away out of sight. So this afternoon I added the gold leaf to her halo and with my tiny needle nosed tweezers attached all those sparkling Swarovski crystals. Although the sky was a bit dingy and overcast to get a good shot of the sparkle, this detail at least picks up the colour of the crystals.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone celebrating today. We had our Canadian Thanksgiving back in October when it was still warm and we could still get by in sandals...seems like a long time ago now.

One Month Away and Snow In The Air!

A bit of snow in the air today, and Christmas is...WHAT? One month from today! Ever since I was a child, the weeks leading up to Christmas have always been the quickest to pass. And as the years have crept along, well...time marches even faster it seems.

Sadly, my camera is in the shop again so I have no new work to post. But for those of you who are checking into my Christms Studio Sale I will add a couple new pieces once that camera comes home.

In the meantime, this is a painting that I'll be adding to my sale later today. It seems I'm still finding the odd painting tucked away here and there. And as the advertisers say "Everything Must Go!"

It's called "Such A Pretty Pair" and is painted in acrylics on a wooden box frame, 12 x 36 inches, kind of sweet and romantic I think.

It's Been So Long...

It has been too long since I sat down to write anything on this blog. I've thought about it, signed in...then stared at the screen, tapped away at the keyboard and then hit "delete"...the muses had fled and abandoned me.

My days of late have been mostly spent cleaning the studio, the basement, the kitchen...A brand new year is around the corner and I want to be ready for it!

For those of you who visit my website you might remember that due to family responsibilities I made the difficult decision to cancel all my fall and winter shows. So, it seemed like a good time to run my first ever on line Christmas Studio Sale.

Today is International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

It would have slipped right by me had I not turned on CBC Newsworld just in time to catch an interview with Mia Farrow, who is currently drawing attention to the plight of Haitians following those four recent storms that devastated that tiny country. It's a good day to do something good...even something that may seem too small to matter...

Just take the time to click on the The Hungersite to help provide food to the hungry. It's a fabulous site, well worth the time.

Autumn's Here - Well Almost

Even before the calender tells us it is officially Fall, there's no escaping it, Autumn is undeniably here. Before we close up the ponds for the winter, I thought I'd share one last shot of the gorgeous foliage.

As I made dinner tonight, the radio played the plaintive sounds of Hawksley Workman's "Autumn's Here", the perfect accompaniment to my thoughtful mood.

Canadian Breast Cancer Network Online Auction

The Days Are Getting Shorter

Sitting here at my computer this evening, it's only 7:30 and already dark. I'm still clinging stubbornly to sandals and shorts...but it is undeniably autumn.

I finished a couple of large paintings today. They were commissioned by a loyal collector who has been a great supporter. I was really excited about this project. I was going for an early 20th Century kind of feel...sort of channeling the style of Modigliani...
It was a cloudy day today; I took these shots indoors on my easel but I think you can get the idea.

Last week I decided to open my eBay store again. I'm still in the process of stocking my virtual shelves, but I'm getting there and running a number of auctions. I'm starting this angel called "Out of the Blue" at auction tonight. It's mixed media, acrylic, Swarovski crystals and gold leaf on a box frame.

Frida, Trotsky and the CBC

Even though I'm not able to be there, I'm so happy to see the sun shining on the Old Ottawa South Arts and Music Festival... Well, the sun was shining when I started this post. It is late summer after all so we have to expect that that soft breeze blowing may bring a few clouds.

For those of you who are radio addicts like myself, you'll understand my incredible sense of loss over the replacement of several familiar shows and personalities on my beloved national broadcaster CBC 2. It seems the management at CBC Radio have decided that it was time for a radical makeover. I'm sad, no, I'm heartbroken to say that after many years my dial is no longer tuned to CBC 2, at least not Monday to Friday. So my kitchen radio is now set to CBC Radio One. Oh yes, I miss the lovely mix of world, jazz, roots and classical music that once kept me company. But with any luck, CBC One will at least connect me to what is Canada...I hope. And yesterday, thanks to Ottawa Morning I discovered a fabulous photo artist living and working here in Ottawa! Check out Genevieve Thauvette. It was all background chatter until I heard the words "Frida and Trotsky". So, if you're anywhere near Ottawa, visit the Dale Smith Gallery to see her amazing interpretation of the self portrait.

With Frida on my mind again...here's the latest in my "Frida à Klimt" series.

Old Ottawa South Art and Music Festival

Saturday, Sept 18 is the Old Ottawa South Art and Music Festival. It is a fabulous one day, outdoor event in a leafy, green, neighbourhood park. I've been so looking forward to exhibiting at this show again, but sadly I've hit a snag and won't be able to attend. So, my apologies to everyone in the Ottawa area who might have stopped by. August Over Too Soon

August roared past me like a freight train and here I am, in near disbelief that the calender page has flipped to September. No matter how cool or rainy it may have been, I mourn the end of summer. But of course, there's little time for nostalgia, September is the month of new beginnings and another outdoor show. I'm off tomorrow for my first year at Cabbagetown Art and Crafts. Frida à la Klimt again!

August 24 already! My apologies to those of you who regularly visit my little blog. With the clock ticking towards Cabbagetown Art and Crafts Show, I've been spending long hours at the easel.

This piece is another in my on-going Frida à la Klimt series. I've had this one started since sometime in the mid winter, but just couldn't seem to figure out the deco design until last week. I splurged on this one and used lots of 14K gold leaf from Thailand. It is so delicate and rich; almost buttery in texture.

Back Again

Apologies for these long stretches between posts. I haven't been in my studio as often as I usually am. But I have managed to finish a couple of pieces.

This sweet little Chihuahua is called "Kahlu"; what a great name for a sweet little dog. I did it in acrylics on 5 x 7 in wood for a very nice collector.

The second piece is acrylics and collage paper, another red haired angel.

Frida at Home

It's late afternoon here in my little studio and I'm already noticing how the days seem to be getting shorter. Summer is so fleeting, especially in a northern climate. We've had a wet summer here, not nearly enough sun, but everything is gloriously green and lush. There's the lightest soft breeze drifting in my window; it's all quite lovely.

I've been working on commissions this week. They're not quite ready to share, but in the meantime, I've received a lovely shot of one of my large "Frida à la Klimt" pieces hung in its new home. Many thanks to Catherine for her patronage and for sharing this photo of Frida in her new home.

Home From Hillside Festival

It always takes a day or two to come down from Hillside Festival. It's one of those special summer festivals full of great music, amazing food and friendly supportive people who stop by my tent and go home with a piece of my art. And if I'm very lucky, I'm blessed with my "Hillside Moment"...that one little treasure that I'll hold in my memory until the next Hillside comes along. And 2008 did not disappoint. This is my 2008 Hillside Moment.

Shortly after six pm on Sunday, just moments after Stuart McLean had taken the stage, the wind blew, the heavens opened, and the rain came down. I can’t remember exactly how many people took refuge in our tent, but we all hung on and prayed that it would hold tight until the storm had passed. The wind was crazy, the rain was pelting down, but it was all over in a matter of moments. The sun came out, the tent cleared, and the show went on…

It soon became time for the Aboriginal Circle to close. As the participants, including eight Tibetan monks turned to face the four corners of the world, singing and drumming, the brightest, most breathtaking rainbow you can imagine arched perfectly above the wigwam.

Everyone was snapping pictures…except me…I never seem to have my camera…but I think I prefer having this one stored away in my memory rather than a photograph...

So now it's time to return to my paints...maybe tomorrow I'll have something new to post...

Madonna Icon Revisited

Sunday night and time to clean my brushes and turn this machine off! I've been working on a few commissions these past few days. One is a gift so of course I can't share it until after the surprise is delivered.
But I can share this one...it's a recreation of one of my previous pieces...a little tweak here and a little tweak there and it's a brand new piece. I've sent a pic off to the collector and they are delighted. This is the best music to my ears.

I loved painting this one...reminds me of pre and early Renaissances. I used lots of texture and gold leaf. Tomorrow, after it's glazed, I'll add a few Swarovski crystals.

The Garden Pond

Somehow the week has gotten away from me. I started this post last Saturday and the clock ticked away and it remained a draft... But I'm going to go ahead and post it...so for the next paragraph, just pretend it's Saturday.

A glorious weekend off...well, I'll still be painting, but happily, we're not packing up the car for a show! The sun is shining, no sign of rain and even the humidity and mosquitoes seem to have taken bit of a holiday. I don't often share personal photos or stories, I'm not a good photographer, nor a great writer, so the focus of this humble little blog will remain my paintings. But as I so completely enjoyed my morning coffee in the back yard, I thought I'd share a shot of my unkempt garden pond. I made the garden warrior using a hypertufa recipe I found on the interent. I poured the mixture of cement, sand, and peat moss into a plastic pail, caught it before it set and carved it using an old paring knife. He's been guarding the pond for the last four years, surviving even the harshest of winters.

So that was Saturday and now it's Tuesday and I've been painting of course, so I'll share some work with you.

This painting is called "Favourite Friends". It's a collage on gallery wrapped canvas and I've got it up for auction on eBay.

Ive been experimenting with this really cool texture paint I found at the art store. This Frida is definitely Art Deco...a bit industrial, a bit naive, maybe even a bit Nouveau.

Etude

Back from the Cobourg Waterfront Festival and very happy to have three weeks off before Hillside Festival. I've been so busy with these shows I haven't even had a chance to check out the line up - until tonight. I am so excited! Vinyl Café, Hawksley Workman, Sarah Slean, Cowboy Junkies, Sue Folley, and so many more. It is going to a fantastic weekend! But in the meantime, I've got work to do and bills to pay.

So, the brushes were flying today. I finished this little Frida and have listed it tonight on eBay She's all a-glitter and sitting pretty with her violin and sweet little birds.

I've called this little piece "Etude"...I love music terminology.

Thunderstorms and Festivals

Summer is so short in this part of the world...we wait and we wait and we wait while the winter wind blows and the snow flies and then finally winter ends. But here we are already past the summer solstice and still wondering about our beloved summer weather. We had another thunderstorm today and it doesn't look like it's over yet. Let's hope there's sun and gentle weather for the Cobourg Waterfront Festival. Never Caught Up!

With less than a week left before the Cobourg Waterfront Festival I'm spending long hours at my paints. I have a number of new pieces all set to take pictures of...if I can dash out during a sunny break from these rain showers that seem to roll in every hour. Perhaps later today.

And I have to tell you about my June Nibblefest entry on eBay. As you may recall, I participate in a art contest once at month with a number of really fine artists. It's a themed contest, this month the theme is "Out of the Mist" and all entries must start at the low opening bid of $0.99. The auction closes on June 27th so you still have lots of time. Have some fun, try a bid or two!

Home Again

Home again from another show. And this time the weather was just not as co-operative as we had hoped. We had sun, we had shade...and yes we also had thunder and lightening. And the last place I care to be during an electrical storm is in a wooded park under a metal frame tent! We were very happy to pack up and hit the highway home.

And of course it's back to work for me. Here's a little 8 x 10 in canvas, called "Twilight Tricks. It's at auction on eBay and ends in the evening on June 22. I've added a little touch of glitter to Frida's dress and the stars in the sky. These cats have simply worn her out!

Dogs and Mermaids

When you are awakened by the sound of your 92 pound dog throwing up on the bedroom rug you know that you should tread lightly on this day...
Matters of doggie bodily functions are left to my ever suffering husband as I have the weakest of stomachs. I can gag at the mere thought of what went on at 6:11 am!
So, I quickly sidestepped the - well, you know what - thinking my skills could be better utilized making coffee and hubby's brown bag lunch. A lovely way to avoid the doggie mess except that in my haste to exit the bedroom, I forgot my glasses, which meant that I was doing everything by touch and sound rather than by sight...the end result being a broken glass and big ol' boo boo on my right hand. I did have a moment of panic, fearing that I might not be able to hold a paint brush for a day or two. But plenty of pressure, cold water and band aids put me back together again.

So with only one sleep before we head to Toronto for the Beaches Arts and Crafts Show I've finished a few more pieces. It's already late and time for bed, so I'll just put a few up here. As always, you can see more on my website.

The Day After

Well Art In The Park 2008 is now behind us. And it was a glorious weekend. While other parts of Ontario had severe storms we had mostly blue skies over head. It was incredibly hot but heck, we complained all winter about the cold and the snow, so it's time to enjoy summer.

I would have loved to take today day off to clean up my studio and maybe even relax, but there was no time for that with Beaches Art and Crafts Showthis weekend. So it was right back to my easel. And my poor hubby is the steamy hot garage right this minute building a couple more box frames for me...what a great guy.

I finished a couple of pieces to day that I had been started earlier in the year. At least I think they're finished...hmm, maybe tomorrow I'll feel differently....

I took these pics indoors so the quality isn't great. I'll have better outdoor shots tomorrow and add them to my website. And now it's time to clean my brushes and call it a day!

Glitter and Art Deco!

I can't be the only one out there old enough to remember "glitter paint kits". I've heard they're quite collectible these days. Back in the 1960's these sparkly paint by number kits were absolutely magical to a little farm girl like I was. And I remember it was the year that I snooped around and found my Mom's Christmas stash. And yes, I ultimately got caught. I do recall that Christmas really wasn't as much fun knowing what I would find under the tree.

Well today's first painting is my own glitter collage painting. It's a sweet little mermaid who has decided to set her basket of fish free! I seem to be on a theme here...yesterday a basket of butterflies and today the fishes...maybe it will make us all more conscious of the need to conserve and take only what we really need...

And for those of you who read my blog, you know that tomorrow is my first summer show, you can find all the info for this and my other shows on my website. And as I mentioned earlier in the week, I've been finishing all the paintings that have been lurking in the corners of my studio. I did pretty well, so thought I'd share them with you too.

This one is called "You Will Remember". It's acrylic on a large 12 x 36 in wooden box frame. The border is done in a sort of faux verdi gris finish. It's a romantic piece I think.

Another romantic woman done in my à la Klimt style in gold and acrylics on 16 x 20 in box frame. It's called "Touch of Romance".

More Klimt influence in this Frida piece. It's a large 18 x 36 in canvas and called "Out of Gold". I've used gold and silver leaf as well as coloured metallic paints.

And finally, one more Frida à la Klimt. I called this one Asian Accents. It's also 18 x 36 in canvas in gold and coloured metallic paints...quite jewel like I think.

And now, I'm off to pack up for the show!

A Basket of Butterflies

Three More Almost Finished

The push to be ready for ART in The Park this weekend continues! I've got to keep this post short as it's already after 8 pm and I'm still working. It's been a cool rainy day and paint is slow to dry but nothing that can't be helped along by a little blast from the hairdryer.

These are three pieces that had been in various states of "started, but not finished" that I'm determined to have ready for the show this weekend.

Art in The Park Around the Corner!

Last night I looked around at all the paintings that are nicely started, almost finished, and those that should never be finished and soon realized I need some organization and discipline to get my creative life in order. Sometimes there's nothing like a big brush, a can of gesso and a good strong stroke to put things in perspective. Aside from painting over a few canvases, I did make some other small advances today. I finished a couple of small paintings and put the final touches on a small commission that I can't share just yet, 'cause it's a gift.

But there is so much work left to do before my first outdoor show, Art in The Park right here in Ottawa that I'd better dash.

But thought I'd share the little piece that can be shared and get a little more work done before it's time for bed. This piece is a collage and acrylic on 8 x 10 in canvas. It's hard to see, but the crowns are done in a deep metallic gold. It's called "What Dynasty Is This?".

The End of A Beautiful Month

May and June are my favourite months...I love the trees that bloom in early May, the scent of apple blossoms that give way to lilacs as the month travels on. I've had a gorgeous lilac bouquet in the kitchen counter for the past week, but it's now time to toss them in the composter. And finally, it has been warm enough this past week to empty that composter and plant some basil and a few tomato plants. With a small yard and a big do, my vegetable gardening is limited to containers.

May has proven to be a productive time, which is good. With three shows in June, the next month is going to fly. I'm a bit behind in posting pics, but I have updated my website so you can always find my work there. So here are a few from the past little while that I think I missed on my blog.

Once A Year

We just arrived home from the yearly pilgrimage to the vet's with a clean bill of health for both doggie and kitty. Once again here it is, the end of a long day, I'm ready for a book and a cup of tea but determined to post a couple of the paintings I've been working on this week. I've stayed mostly in the "little Primitive" mode and have great fun.

This one is on 5 x 7 x 3/4 in wood and is called "Dobeedobeetwo".

Another little one on wood; acrylic and collage paper and it's called Macbeen and Molly. And now it's time to turn this thing off!

Monday Again

Clotheslines and Rain Showers

What a gorgeous day it's been! Everything is so fresh and green and I actually had laundry dry on the clothesline...well, it has been there since yesterday and did get caught in the rain at least four times yesterday. But today it is gloriously dry and smelling that wonderful out door smell!

I've got a couple of new pieces finished, these were scanned rather than photographed so the quality of the pics may not be quite as good but I've missed the sun so they'll have to do.

This one is called "Teddy Time". I listed it at auction on eBay yesterday, already a bid - Yeah!

Long Gone Weekend

The long weekend behind, the paint brushes are flying!

For those of you who have visited my blog before, you'll remember that on the 20th of the month, I try to participate in Nibblefest, a themed art contest organized by a collection of talented artists on eBay. I started my entry last week, and put the final touches on it last night just in time. Every piece of art entered is listed at $0.99! And yes, it is a gamble for the artist, particularly in these uncertain economic times. But, we do it!

The theme this month is "Jungle Life". When I hear the word "jungle" my imagination always takes me to the work of Henri Rousseau. So, my entry is Frida à la Rousseau.

I called it "Jungle Dreams"...not the most creative of titles, but naming them is always the hardest part for me.

Victoria Day Beckons!

My Victoria Day weekend is starting in one and a half hours! I'm setting down my brushes and putting the lids on all my paints...and I won't pick them up again until Tuesday morning! Yes, I am starting the weekend a day early, but with my June schedule so busy with three shows, I need some time to relax before that busy month begins.

So before I take my little break, thought I'd post a couple of pieces I finished earlier in the week.

"Remember When" is done on 8 x 10 inch gallery wrapped canvas. Since I've recently closed my eBay store, I have it at auction on eBay .

The next piece is a small folk Madonna done on 5 x 7 x 3/4 in wooden block. It's called "Gentle Mary of the Roses" and is also at auction on ebay.

Busy days as the long weekend approaches. My days are filled building stock for the summer shows and completing commissions. I've just finished one for a very special collector. She gave me the perfect situation, plenty of lead time, and such a reasonable wish list. The subject of the piece is Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, luck, love and beauty, the lotus flower and fertility. The client's suggested palette was perfect, we agreed upon the gold and crystals I love to work with and I was away! I placed the goddess against a background inspired by the beautiful batiks of Indo Asia.

It's a large piece, 12 x 36 inches and absolutely sparkles with Swarovski crystals. Here's a detail shot just to give you an idea.

Every Thing Old Is New Again!

Sometimes, it's a good idea to take a look back at where we've been. When I returned to art full time a few years ago, I discovered the "mini", little pieces of original art bigger than an official "miniature" but still small enough for even the smallest shelf or bit of wall space. My subjects were a bit whimsical, primitive folk I guess...cats and angels and girls. Over the years, I've often strayed, painting bigger and bigger. But this week, faced with my very small studio and my ever growing collection of paintings, I began to paint these little whimsical characters again.

This little piece is 5 x 7 x 3/4 in plywood. It's called Sailor Sally and available on eBay.

Aviator Angel

Saturday morning and it's a bit dreary today...windy and cloudy. A good day for tea and a book on the couch. But I'll be in my studio for most of the day. It's crunch time for a lot of artists I think. It is for me! It's always a struggle to keep the wolf from the door, so I've been offering bargain prices, running sales and auctions with low opening bids on eBay hoping to create some traffic. Sometimes it seems like I'm spread a bit too thin...the hours are long and the pay...well, don't get me started. But I love to paint, so here I am!

I've got a couple of new pieces I've just posted on my website. I found a few old frames in the basement that I painted with my favourite shade of green over a crackle finish. Looks nice and aged. Once yard sale season starts I plan to collect some more old frames...I love the way they finish off a folk piece.

This one is called Aviator Angel. The outside frame dimensions are 15 x 19 inches.

Deadlines and Angels

Well, the à la Klimt painting is still unfinished. Sometimes, I have to set these pieces aside and move on to something else for a day or two. I just couldn't bring myself to concentrate on the itty bitty details today. But of course, I painted, I always paint and I do find solace in painting angels. It's been a hectic couple of weeks, deadlines for the Originals show, tax time, family stuff...it was definitely time this week to attempt to recover with an angel or two.

The first one is still unfinished. I started it on Monday; I've used texture paint to create a raised Celtic braid on her halo and gown. I haven't quite worked out how I'm going to finish it...maybe tomorrow.

The second angel is finished. I've called it "Beautiful Pure". It's acrylic on 12 x 16 in gallery stretched canvas, and is hopefully, peaceful and calm. I've taken a chance and listed it on eBay for a pretty low opening bid...sigh...always a gamble.

I spent another long day at the easel with another in the à la Klimt series. This one is a Frida. I took this shot indoors so the quality is low but here's the latest "work in progress". It's a large canvas, 18 x 36 inches with lots of golds.

I've been putting in long hours on this latest series of à la Klimt paintings. So far, I've done two interpretations of the Madonna and the third one is simply two women. I've done this sort of composition before...I like the impression of comfort and trust the pose seems to create. The women may represent sisters, friends, or even mother and daughter. Whatever the relationship it is one of closeness.

I call this piece "Almost Gold". I've used gold leaf and various liquid gold and metallic paints on a wood box frame. The shot below gives a bit more detail.

Another Golden Madonna

As I sit here at my window, I can just about watch the buds opening on the maple tree. This morning I watched a little scramble between a robin and a brown squirrel. I'm not sure who got there first but they both seemed to be claiming squatter's rights!
I finished the latest in my à la Klimt series. It's a Madonna, quite reflective and a little sad, more romantic than art deco. I've used a combination of metallics and gold leaf. It's a fairly large piece 16 x 20 inches on a 1.5 inch deep box frame.

Happy Earth Day All! I hope you had a moment to think about and act upon ways to care for this beautiful island we all share.

I'm back in my little studio following the Originals Spring Show. One of the best things about getting out and participating in an art and craft show, other than the obvious advantage of making a bit of money, is the opportunity to meet wonderful new artisans. We always help each other out, and share a few much needed laughs if the hours get long and the sales are scarce. My newest craft show friend is Joanne Jones and she is amazing! She is all about strength, generousity and commitment to her fellow humans and good old mother earth. But I'm going to let Joanne's own website Minedrecreations fill you in on how she recycles cast off clothes into very cool fashion accessories. And to make this environmentally ethical adventure even better, a portion of each sale helps fund a South African girl’s university education.

And I'm back to my paints again. I'm working on another Klimt inspired piece, still just an idea. But in the meantime, here's my April Nibblefest entry on eBay. Nibblefest is a themed art contest that starts on the 20th of each month. This month the theme is reptiles. Reptiles come in many shapes and sizes but I chose a snake. the snake's eyes are little sparkly Swarovski crystals. And as usual, the auctions start at the scary low bid of $0.99!

Zen, Tape and Spirit of Macgyver

Thursday morning, and just a few minutes to spare before I blast out the door for DAY ONE of Originals Spring Craft Sale. It was the usual sprint to the finish to get as much new work ready as possible, and then the absolute bedlam of packing up the trailer and setting up the show. The display always looks pretty passable by the time it's assembled and the work hung...but I admit the process is lacking in ZEN. We never seem to do the same lay out twice. My ever loyal and suffering hubby seems to channel the spirit of MacGyver, to somehow build the display and hang as many pieces as possible. And all this without a swiss army knife! And yesterday, we had even managed to forget the duct tape!

But this is it, the show must go on and will go on!

Originals Preparations in High Gear

Here it is already Monday, and Originals Spring Craft Sale is just a few short days away! As much as I wanted to paint, I've been organizing my work all day today, making sure each new painting is completely finished, I've signed it and it's ready to be packed up. I've been busy taking photos of the new pieces and loading up the images to my website. It's always a mad dash to the finish line!

And more excellent news has arrived, it's official, I'll be at One Of A Kind Show in Toronto next November. So many things to do before that one, including transportation and accommodations. But one day at a time. In the meantime, here's one of the paintings I'll be taking to the show this week.

It's called "Promises", done on masonite in a 12 x 24 in box frame. It's soft and romantic and makes me feel like spring has finally arrived. And even though we still have gritty old snow banks, I actually spotted some beautiful little crocuses today. Made me smile.

Hillside Is A Go! Yahoo!

I love Hillside Festival. It's just one of those amazing weekends that makes a summer memorable. I'll write more about it later. But for now, I'm cheering, I got the happy news today that I've been accepted as a vendor at Hillside 2008!

Spring Cleaning Sale!

With Originals Spring Showcoming up on the 17th, you can imagine I have new work in every corner and nook and cranny! I decided I need do some spring cleaning! So, I'm running a week long 50% off sale at my eBay store. Sometimes it's just good idea to freshen things up.

This piece is not part of the sale. I just finished it today. It's a mixed media collage including vintage sheet music, an old map, Swarovski crystals gold leaf and plenty of glazing and texture...it's reminiscent of my Byzantine icons...but with a contemporary feel.

Feathers and Glitter

For the next couple of weeks, it's all about getting ready for Originals Spring Show. I'm still working on the collection of small format paintings on 5 x 7 inch canvas board. Here are a couple more I've finished this week.

This one is called Arianna. She's got dramatic blue eyeshadow with all kinds of sparkly glitter.

This one is called Alina, yes I'm working my way through the "A"s. She's very glittery and is topped off with a Swarovski crystal and real feather on her head band. And I discovered today that even all cleaned and dyed these feathers are irresistible to both the dog and the cat!

Forgotten Keys and Understated Sparkle

Today I experienced one of those random acts of kindness that are just so special. It was small in the grand scheme of things, but a perfect gesture. I am a "multi tasker". Most of the time I'm pretty accomplished, particularly when it comes to combining dog walking, grooming, exercise getting and postal pickup and delivery. Doggie knows at a fairly predictable time in the day, I will wash my brushes and exchange my slippers for boots and get her leash from the closet. It is naturally her favourite time of the day, so there is much Malamute howling and general excitement. It has been a snowy winter but finally, mercifully, the snow is beginning to melt. As welcome as this sign of spring is, it is undoubtedly the dirtiest time of year for the big dog owner. After much trial and error, I've discovered that the mush and slush that accumulates on her long coat, brushes out nicely if first rubbed with snow followed by a brisk raking.

So today was really no different as I struggled to grip the leash, the letters and the dog brush while I locked the door and get going. But, twenty minutes later, I realized that my hands seemed much too free and it was my keys that were missing. Yep, I had locked the door and left them in the lock! As I hurried home, it was easy to imagine a stolen car, ransacked home...plus all the embarrassment knowing that I had done a really dumb thing. And this is where I get to the random act of kindness. While I was out, I had received a postal delivery and there tucked safely and discretely behind the packages were the house keys. Thank you kind postal employee! You made my day!

And oh yeah, this is what I was painting today before I headed out on my little adventure.

It's called "Understated Sparkle" and is another in my growing collection of party girls. And she has lots of sparkle, glitter on her eyelids and little swarovski crystals on her ear rings and necklace.

Spring Easter Christmas...where do the hours go?

With my first show, Originals Spring Show , just around the corner I'm spending even longer hours than usual in my studio. Once the huge snow drift in front of my window has melted, my little room will be flooded with light, especially in the afternoon. But for now, I'm still in the shadow of the snow mountain. I'm using it again tonight as a backdrop for my latest collection of little paintings. These little guys are painted on 4 x 6 in canvas panels and have little embellishments like glitter or Swarovksi crystals. Hmm...they'll make great stocking stuffers...what am I doing??? - still not dug out from the winter of 2007/2008 and already thinking about next Christmas!

Infinite Variety

Yes, it's already 7:00 pm and no I didn't jot anything down for my blog before this moment...but I did tidy up my studio a wee bit, and I did paint today. I started a new angel and a Madonna on this Palm Sunday and I finished a Frida. I haven't painted many Frida pieces yet this year. This one is very folky, very sweet.

I called this one "Infinite Variety", a coupling of words I found in the introduction by Carlos Fuentes to "The Diary of Frida Kahlo". It's a marvelous introduction to her journal.

A Bit of A Vixen, A bit of a Vamp

Every day I promise myself that I'm going to set aside a few minutes early in the day, at an hour that I'm more likely to be able to put two words together to write in my blog. And here it is again, the sun in low in the sky; I'm tired and ready for the couch and, yep, I haven't written a thing in my blog. But as I've said before, I'm much more a painter than a writer, so I'll at least post a couple of new pieces. And don't forget, you can find lots more of my work, new and old at my website.

The first piece started out as another in my series of Flapper girls. As I worked, she became a bit more goth, a little bit scary. I used acrylics and gold leaf on wood. I like the texture of the wood. I called her "Vara (the Vixen)".

This one is also painted on wood, and is definitely a vamp! I called her Astrid...I love that name.

Angels and Snow

Can you believe it? The city just got the sidewalks cleared yesterday and it's snowing AGAIN! And it's still cold, but spring will come. With snow in the air and spring on my mind, it seemed like a good day to pare things down and paint some good old fashioned folk angels. As much as I love detail in a piece, there's something so sweet about country inspired figures. They're rustic and look simple, but sometimes it takes me longer "not to paint" things than to paint them...if you know what I mean.

So after a long day in the studio, there's a host of angels growing on my window sill.

The Toronto Star is reporting that 52 centimetres of snow fell yesterday here in Ottawa. It just fell and fell and this is how it looked when we woke up this morning.

And finally, the sun shone and I was able to get some decent shots of my recent paintings. So, here's Adelaide, the first in a series of funky fun, party girls.

She's a bit of a flapper I think, with her black bobbed hair and long red beads.

Ribbons, Pearls and More Snow

Earlier this week, in the midst of snow, snow and more snow, I decided it was time to take a few chances. Over the past few years my work has become more serious, more spiritual. Maybe it’s this endless winter, but it seems time to have a bit more fun with my art. So, I got to work with crystals, ribbons and pearls. I think it may even be time for feathers, fabric and more glitter…but we’ll see. These creative leaps are not always as easy on the canvas as they are in words.

Although it’s snowing much too hard to take a shot of these latest paintings outside, I’ve lined a few new pieces on the window sill. (And yes, that is a giant snow drift behind.) These little ladies were great fun to paint. And I'm not sure if you can see in the shot, but I've incorporated a bit of glitter, some ribbons and pearls.

And yes, we're in the midst of yet another storm...

How ManyMore Days Until Spring?

Last night I realized that I have paintings hung on just about every bit of wall space; they're tucked behind every door in our house, upstairs and downstairs. Even though I need plenty of inventory for Originals Spring Show and the shows that follow, I decided to spend a few hours listing these finished pieced on my various gallery sites. You can link to my galleries on the side bar on the right to get an idea of prices and sizes of my available pieces.

So, I had a few less hours available to paint today. I did finish a commission for a truly lovely collector. But since the piece is a surprise for a loved one, I won't be posting it for a while. I will share a spring inspired work in progess...perfect therapy on a day when another 27 centimetres of snow fell...and only weeks until it is officially spring!

Lady Bugs and Hearts On A String

As I sat at the computer this morning, wishing for the promise of spring instead of the threat of yet another snowstorm a ladybug shot over my head and landed amongst my paints and brushes! Where did this little miracle of nature come from on a cold and wintry day? I couldn’t send her outside, like I do in summer, so I just had to hope that she’ll find a way to survive until spring…

I spent most of the day on a commission. It’s not quite ready, but maybe tomorrow. In the meantime, here’s here’s another little romantic folk girl.
Even if Valentines Day is past,hearts never really go out of style. These hearts are on a string held by a sweet faced girl. Perfect for a romantic girl of any age!

Good Night Jeff

I often think about the miraculous gift of the senses...how much I love good food, how smell is so tangled up with taste, how touch informs our every move, without sight, I couldn't be an artist...but hearing, how I would miss the music that fills my days as I paint if I lost the gift of hearing.

So today has been a sad day, the news that jazz blues guitarist Jeff Healy had passed away at just 41. As I spoke with a friend and fellow fan tonight she said how it seemed like his music had just always been there. He was respected not only as one of the greatest blues guitarists, but also for his wonderful spirit. He will be missed by so many...Good Night Jeff.

But before I turn out the lights, I will share a new piece, a sort of medieval princess...pale and romantic.

Winter Snow and Easter Promise

As I look over the drift of snow before my window, it's hard to believe that both Easter and spring are around the corner! Perhaps in response, I've painted a sweet angel and her little bunny to bring us all the heavenly promise of renewal.

I've used a box frame again, so it really doesn't need to be framed. It's a bit of a rustic look but nicely suits the subject. I've used a traditional folk pairing of deep wine and blue and I've finished it off with a light beeswax finish, giving it a vintage look and feel.

Snow and Cold but Oh So Sunny!

Finally, something to share! I've been back for a few days now, it's still winter, my studio is still messy, but I have finished a piece or two. These pics were taken outside very quickly in full sun so there is a bit of glare. It was just too ccold for me to take a lot of time to set the shot up. They're both done in acrylics on box frames and will be finished off in beeswax. And once again I've been influenced by the work of Canadian artist Jean Paul Lemieux.

This one is called "Beyond The Trees" and is 20 x 16 inches.

And before I dash back to work, this is Jenna. Even in her thick Malamute coat, she would really rather be in the house than outside,unless of course she's on the pulling end of the leash...hmmm...which reminds me, almost time to walk the dog.

A Windy Sunday Night

Sunday night, the wind is blowing and I'm ready for a cup of tea and my book. We never seem to get around to buying proper book shelves, so our books seem to be constantly moving...from beside the bed to the closet, to the window seat...sometimes taking a break in in the basement, but more often than not they're lent to a friend or given to our daughter...she has bookshelves. And sometimes when I'm at her house, I browse through her shelves, pick up a book that interests me and realize, that it's my book or at least was mine. We are book lovers. I'm reading two books right now, "Love in the Time of Cholera," and "The Lion, the Fox and The Eagle." I'm not sure which one I'll reach for first tonight...

And I painted this weekend. I finished two new pieces, a Frida and a Nun, both with crows and both on box frames, finished with beeswax.

A Little William Morris

I’ve always loved the work of the Pre- Raphaelites, and lately I’ve been particularly fascinated by the fabric and wallpaper designs of William Morris. I had planned to search out some fabric remnants and wall paper ends to start work on some collage pieces. But, as I looked at the snow coming down again today, I just couldn’t bring myself to dig the car out and slip and slide my way on any excursion that wasn’t completely necessary. So, instead I decided to paint a “William Morris”, well at least inspired by. It’s a sort of take on his “Orange Tree”. Over the next few weeks I hope to incorporate the Morris designs into my figurative pieces.

I also finished another Madonna, this one is done on a rustic piece of wood, plenty of texture and finished off with gold leaf on the halo. The robes and pose are inspired by a Virgin and Child masterpiece by Duccio di Buoninsegna.

Applications and Spring Promises

Where have I been?

I've been at my desk for the last few days filling out applications and writing cheques! These are the busy days of trying to figure out a reasonable and workable show schedule for the forthcoming year. All the artisans "on the circuit" have their favourite shows and festivals. Some allow strictly wall art, some welcome just about every medium including body care, candy, chutney and jewelry. Some festivals are all about the music with a little art on the side. And every show has it's own specific set of requirements for the application process. I think it's safe to say all require a cheque and basic "tombstone" information. But after that I have to make sure I have my glasses on and read the fine print very carefully.

Naturally, all juries want to see sample of the work. Some are satisfied with a link to my website, others want only photos of a specific number and size, some accept a CD. And then they might want an artist statement, a CV, a description of the process involved in the work, and a picture or detailed description of my display.

And then come the weeks and months of waiting. Will I be juried in or receive the dreaded, "thank you for your application...we regret...and we hope you'll try again next year." Even with happy, satisfied collectors all over the world, it happens...I've been turned down. So, your ego at the door and carry on!

But in the midst of all this I got back to my paints and completed another angel on a box frame.

It was snowy and cold when I finished this one, I was dreaming of spring and called it; "I'll Promise Spring."

Box Frames Snow Storms and Another Angel Painting

It seems the groundhogs are in agreement. Punxsutawney Phil and Wiarton Willie are both predicting six more weeks of winter. We had another storm of grand, snowy proportions yesterday, and I suspect the famous rodents are excellent prognosticators and we can expect to need our woolies for some time to come!

But as always, my work goes on, rain, shine, snow and all weather in between. I've just moments ago finished a commission piece destined for the UK. The collector requested a box frame rather than canvas and I am so happy that she did. Hubby had an excuse to buy his new air nailer and I now have a stack of box frames ready for gesso and paint. He used 1 1/2 in x 1/2 in wood for the frame, the painting surface is cut the same size as the outside dimensions of the frame, nailed down and smoothed and sanded. I don't actually mind them a bit "rustic" as I use a lot of texture in many of my paintings anyway.

It seems hard to believe, but I'm also beginning to build inventory for my first (so far at least) show of 2008. So if you're in the Ottawa area, mark your calender, ORIGINALS The Spring Craft Sale takes place April 17th to 20th, 2008 at the Ottawa Civic Centre, Lansdowne Park.

Tom Allen, the morning host of Music And Company, CBC radio, has just reminded me that this is the last day of January. My last chance to make something of this first month of the New Year...As I survey the scene around me, it's pretty clear I haven't gotten around to cleaning this messy studio of mine...but I have painted, lots and that's really more important.

Marking a Day

I'm happy to say my "to do" list is one item shorter tonight. I've finished one of my commissions; I've sent a jpeg off to the collectors and they're happy, so I am too.

I'm a bit embarrassed to say that I've been so wrapped up in my work and own little life, I had forgotten that today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. In other years, I've done a special painting to mark the day. But this year, January 27th was upon me, before I was reminded by the media. But I will take a moment to remember.

There will be no haggis on my table tonight, but my ever faithful CBC radio has kept me company with the sounds of Robbie Burns. Such heartfelt and moving words and music it is. The Morning Moon

This is a shot of the pale winter moon from my studio window at 7:12 this morning. The light was so beautiful I couldn't resist reaching for my camera. Within a few moments, the sun had chased all this enchanting atmosphere away...

Well, if I was in my studio at 7 am and it's now almost 9 pm, I do believe it is time to call it a day. I was busy printing a wholesale order today but managed to finish a small painting. It's called "With Praying Hands".

Black Madonna Painting For Today

It snowed all day today, sometimes great big fluffy flakes and sometimes more of that snow that looks almost like mist. It was beautiful light to paint by. But not the best I realized for taking pictures of my finished work. The browns are much richer than I'm seeing on my monitor. I call this Black Madonna "Divine Within." The background and halo are deeply textured and I've used gold leaf on halo.

There is a lovely woman and fantastic artist named Judy Vars. She writes a wonderful, entertaining and as I've learned, instructional blog. Her latest entries illustrate the process of "indirect painting". Her resulting paintings are gorgeous. Judy, you've almost convinced me it's time to start experimenting with oils again!

Nibblefest Starts Tonight!

The business journalists and the economists are talking economic gloom and doom these days, so maybe everyone needs a little art to lighten the mood. Today is the 20th, which means it's time for another round of Nibblefest on eBay. Once a month, starting on the 20th, a group of eBay artists list a piece of art they've created on an agreed upon theme. And the listings all open at $0.99. This month the theme is "two animals combined to form one." I was stymied until I started looking through one of my Frida Kahlo books and remembered a piece she had done called "The Little Deer". It is a painful piece, her own portrait complete with antlers on the body of a deer's body riddled with arrows. My little folk piece is gentler, I didn't include the arrows, but rather "framed" the piece in a border of molded clay skulls finished in a faux silver.

While browsing through the "Diary of Frida Kahlo", I came across this entry "...Tragedy is the most ridiculous thing "man" has but I'm sure that animals suffer, and yet they do not exhibit their "pain" in "theatres" neither open nor "closed"(their "homes") and their pain is more real than any image that any man can "perform" xxxor or feel as painful._________

Strangely coincidental I saw five beautiful deer while out walking the dog this afternoon. They were quite close and not the least bit startled.

Opera, Angel Painting and Unfinished Frida

Even though it is Saturday and I had promised myself some time away from the computer and the easel, here I am still at it. As I've mentioned before, CBC Radio Two is my constant companion. My treat today was a broadcast of the Metropolitan Opera 1977 performance of La Boheme, staring Luciano Pavarotti and Renata Scotto. I'm a total "no nothing" in the field of opera, but as I believe Popeye the Sailor Man, that great philosopher said, "I knows what I likes." And I like opera. I love opera. I can't carry a tune and I struggled through grade school music classes, but I love opera and especially Puccini.

I remember the moment I discovered opera, in a most pedestrian way. We had taken the kids to the Festival of Fire in 1993. We had neglected to buy tickets that would provide seating, so there we were scurrying around with four kids in tow trying to find the best view of the fireworks over the Toronto waterfront. As I recall, at least one of them was crying, it was hard to find an unobstructed view, but the sky was filled with fire and the air was filled with Pavarotti and well, "friends". I was converted on the spot! I went out and bought "Pavarotti and Friends" as soon as I could. I know the whole stadium opera thing has many detractors, but for me, it worked. It wasn't long before I had graduated to listening to Pavarotti sans "friends". And one of these days I will make it to the Four Seasons Centre and maybe even the Met, but for now, I have to be satisfied with Saturday Afternoon At the Opera on the radio.

Well, I guess I should talk about the "other" art - painting. I'm working on a couple of Frida à la Klimt pieces, one large, one small. I hope to have at least one finished tomorrow, but here they are in progress.

And I managed to finish an angel painting...

It's called "The Dreams of Angels, is on 15 x 30 inch canvas and as you may be able to see had plenty of texture and metallic copper and gold.

Valentine Angel Painting for Today

As I've been making my way through my supplies, I realize that I have stacks of 8 x 10 in canvas. So you're going to be seeing a lot of smaller paintings for the next month. Although I don't like the extra weight of wood when we haul the art around to shows, I do love to paint on wood. So this week when I received a request for a painting on a wooden "box frame" I had to do a bit of googling to find out just what I need to do. I've already put my request in to hubby to fire up the saw and build the first couple frames. I can't wait to get started on the first experiment.

But in the meantime, there is one less unused 8 x 10 in canvas in my studio. I call it "A Valentine Tale", and it's romantic and sweet with a row of hearts I used texture paint and a stencil to create running down one side. It's always hard to see, but I've used liquid gold leaf on her halo.

With Valentine's day so close, I decided to run this as an auction on eBay.

Romantic Celtic Princess Painting For Today

As you know, one of the places to find my work is on eBay. And you may recall that on the 20th of each month a group of eBay artists have a contest we call Nibblefest. Each participating artist creates a piece, according to a theme. Each piece must be listed for the crazy low price of $0.99! Then we all hope that we get lots of bids! This month the theme is "combine two or more animals to make one." I thought about a mermaid, but I had just painted one, so decided to go in a different direction...I'm not quite finished but will share my entry on the 20th.

In the meantime, I finished a sweet little romantic girl. I think she's a Celtic princess of some sort. I used the same sort of faux finish I've been working with for the last week or so and anchored the four corners with Celtic spirals, I made from clay.

Naive Girl and Dove Painting

I didn't think my posts could get much shorter than yesterday, but here I am wondering what the heck could I possibly say other than "well, here's what I painted today." And well, not much apparently. I started a couple of pieces today, but none of them are really ready to share. So, instead I'll just post the piece I'm putting up for auction on eBay. It's a naive piece that I've had hanging in my house and thought it was time to send it out into the world.

It's a nice big painting 16 x 20 in, I find it rather serene and calming.

Fair Madonna, Taking A Chance

I'm especially out of words tonight so will just get on to my work. It was a day for finishing a couple of pieces that had been started and left alone for a day or two. I finished another small canvas using the faux copper texture to create a "frame". I was listening to a folk roots singer on CBC by the name of Amelia Curran I liked her music and her name, so I called this little piece "Amelia".

And I got a bit of a start on a nice big canvas, another one reflecting my love of the work of Jean Paul Lemieux. We'll see where it goes.

And I'm still taking that grand leap of faith, listing my work on eBay with low opening bids. I've got my fingers crossed for this one. It's called "Purity In Faith"; this time I painted the Madonna with the fairest of skin, blue eyes and blond hair, quite different than my usual dark haired depiction.

Time for Valentine Hearts

Valentine usually comes and goes before I get around to painting anything specifically for that romantic day. So, to make sure I don't do the same thing this year, I've painted another little angel with hearts on her robe. I've used the same faux textured border and Swarovski crystals as in previous pieces and once again contrasted the rich teal with a coral tinged red. Kinda whimsical and romantic, I think...

I've listed this one on eBay with a low opening bid, so hope you have a second to take a peek.

Two New Paintings For Today

It's late afternoon on Saturday and it's just about time to put my paints away and turn off this machine for the night. But before I go, here are two pieces that I finished today. I haven't named either one of them...I'm hoping that will come to me tonight.

The first one is another in the romantic angel series I started before Christmas. It has sort of a Valentine theme, with hearts on the angel's red robe. I used gold leaf on her halo and studded the stars with Swarovski crystals.

The second piece is more of a contemporary folk piece...you'll see the influence of Jean Paul Lemieux, for sure. I used the palette night to create texture in the grassy background and the big cotton ball clouds.

Return To Romance Mermaid Painting for Today

Friday night and I'm just about ready to snuggle up with the cat and call it a day. But before I finally shut the door on my studio, I've got a new piece. It's called "Return to Romance" and is just a sweet simple little mermaid done in a whimsical folk style. I've used the same faux finish technique as I described in yesterday's post.

I've also put another piece at auction on eBay with a ridiculous opening bid of only $0.99 and no reserve! Yep, I'm serious about cleaning out my studio! It's called "Oh Little Bird".

I just wanted to say a little thanks to all who have subscribed to my blog, I'll try to keep the posts short and the new work coming.

Cyber Housecleaning and First eBay Auction for 2008

I'd love to say I have a brand new piece finished and ready to post, but today was one of those necessary "admin" days. Even though my studio desperately needs a complete cleaning, I decided that my website needed the attention as much if not more. So now all those images that had been in my "New Work 2007" page are now displayed by their rightful category and I have a brand new page ready for all the work I hope to do in 2008.

I hope to have a new piece to post tomorrow, but in the meantime, I'll be running my first auction on eBay tonight starting at $9.99!

Yes, I'm A Daily Painter

As seems to be the case, as soon as I open my blog, I'm stricken with writer's cramp. No matter what my best intentions are, I usually post my blog too near the end of the day and every even remotely interesting thought that I might have had has long since fled my consciousness. So I'll just go ahead and post my work. I finished the Frida I had started on Monday and have another Frida that I think is finished...I might add a flower or two to her dress, but I want to leave it for a day or two to think about it. All of these shots were done indoors with "night portrait" setting so the picture quality is low, but at least confirms I have indeed been at my easel.

I've used texture medium and a faux bronze finish to create a "frame". I like the contrast with the teal background.

Christmas Past and Present

Where to start when I've been gone for so long from my little blog? Christmas flew by me. The Originals show was great fun, long hours, but once again I had wonderful neighbours, caught up with some old friends and made some new ones. Before another day goes by, I want to say a sincere thanks to everyone who supported my art during the past year. "Thank you".

The Originals show was a perfect way to end 2007. As I chatted with folks I learned that many have been attending for years, they wait to do their Christmas shopping there and truly support the arts and crafts community. Many stopped by more than once even when the wheather wasn't exactly co-operating.

So, here we are in 2008, the first week already gone. I've been back in my studio most of the week, but not much to show just yet. I've posted a Frida in progress below. With any luck week two of 2008 will prove more productive. So Happy Christmas to all who keep the Gregorian Calendar, and it's back to work for me!

Originals Christmas Show Opens Tomorrow!

The One of A Kind Show Toronto, is now history. It was an amazing show! I can't begin to describe how much talent is gathered together under one roof - visual arts, crafts, furnishings, fashion, food and everything else created by very special artisans. And if you're anywhere near Chicago, you have to go to One of A Kind , Chicago, Dec 6 - 9! I won't be there, but some of the artisans I met in Toronto were packing up for the trip to the Windy City, so it's sure to be fantastic.
I hope to post some links to some of these artists later in the month.

With my oh-so-patient and loyal hubby I will be setting up at another amazing show tonight. If you're in the Ottawa, Ontario area don't miss Originals . The show runs from Dec 6 to 16 and will be the best place to find something special and unique and of course, support the arts community.

And unbelievably, I'm in a TV commercial for the show!

It was quite an adventure to get the video crew squeezed into my tiny upstairs studio. No one but hubby, the dog and cat ever really come into my little space. I'm still asking myself "Is that really me?"...Of course, the camera must have added ten pounds and ten years...and that voice...do I really sound like that? Well, you'll just have to come out to the Originals
show to find out! At least until I figure out how to load the video on my blog...sigh, maybe after the weekend.

I had a couple of shots of most recent work still in my camera when we left last week, so thought I'd post one today.

I've been fascinated with the work of Gustave Klimt for the past few years. This piece is not intended to be dark in any way. Although the angel holds a skull mask, it is not meant to frighten, but to assure that the mystery continues beyond the temporal. Much in the way the Day of the Dead celebrates of the lives of those past, so does this piece. I’ve called this one “Be Not Afraid”.

The angel is positioned against a Klimt inspired Art Deco background in blue, green metallics. Her robe pattern is an homage again to Klimt. I've used plenty of texture and liquid gold leaf for her halo. This is a large dramatic painting, sure to inspire conversation no matter where it is hung!

Paintings! The Night Before

Well, after months of preparation, it's finally the night before the first Christmas art sale! We're off to Toronto tomorrow for the second half of One of A Kind in Toronto. It's been a full day already of painting, packing and wondering if I've done half the things on the list I didn't make.

So before I go back to it all, here's a little sample of the work that's been done since I last posted. I've got just about everything up on my website ...except for one piece that I'll have to get a shot of tomorrow before we leave.

Christmas Angel Paintings

Well, the count is definitely on until Christmas! Yikes, less than a month until One of a Kind show in Toronto! And then right on its heels Originals in Ottawa gets rolling. So, on the weekend, I started a couple of Christmas themed paintings, angels of course. They're both done with acrylics on canvas with plenty of texture and little swarovski crystals for stars.

This one is called "Tree Time".

Angels Painting For Today!

These were done while the camera was ailing, I'm so happy to have it back.

This one is 8 x 16 in and I called it "And A Rose". It's got lots of texture in the background.

This one is done using similar technique, angel times three! It's called "For The Soul and is 16 x 20 in.

This is a big one, 18 x 36 inches. It's called "Bouquet of Peace."

Angels, Cameras, and Work, Work, Work!

Here I am another week has flown by and the Christmas shows are looming closer and closer on the horizon! I've been painting angels all week, and have a good start on another in my à la Klimt series. As you might recall from my last post, the impatient "all thumbs artist", that would be me, managed to injure her beloved camera. The camera returned home from the shop with new pins and memory card, good as new, or so I thought. I anxiously lined up all my finished canvases, aimed the camera carefully and click...somehow, something had happed to the shutter! Every shot was overexposed and looked more like special effects for a Halloween prank than art photos! So, the camera has returned to the shop once again. It has been a year of technical missteps for sure.

But happily, my scanner still works, so I can at least post a couple of small pieces destined for the One of a Kind show and sale in Toronto. These are both acrylic on gallery stretched canvas. The backgrounds are textured and they're shamelessly folky and romantic. The angel has a metallic gold halo. Little Swarovsky crystals sparkle in the night sky over the little girl and her red birds.

Nibblefest Angel Painting

Here it is October 20th! The count down to my Christmas shows is on and with it comes the excitement and just a little bit of that heart pounding panic! One of a Kind in Toronto is just around the corner! And Originals in Ottawa follows fast on its heels! My house is filling up with finished paintings and our living room has been converted into a bit of a workshop where hubby is testing and assembling the new display. There are still so many things left to do...so much planning!

In the midst of all this chaos, I managed to break my camera yesterday! Unbelievable! I won't go into the sorry details, it was definitely "operator error", not covered under warranty, but can be fixed. But it means I'm without camera for a week. So, in the meantime, I'll be posting only those smaller pieces that can fit on my scanner.

Today is also the first day of Nibblefest, the themed art contest on eBay that I participate in when able. All listings must be started at $0.99! The theme this month is "Shadows". My painting is an angel emerging from the shadows. I had painted a larger version but I'll have to wait until my camera is fixed to add it here and to my website.

Well, the shadows are lengthening here in my studio, so it's time to finish up and maybe if I'm lucky hit the couch!

Another Angel Naive Painting

I've been at my easel all week painting angels. I didn't get decent shots of the big pieces yet but thought I'd post this little one. I still don't have a name for it yet...so for today it's Angel October 18 2007.

It may be difficult to see, but it has lots of texture, I used sand in the gesso, everywhere but the face and neck. A great alternative to commercial texture medium. I'm continuing my series of naive angels and will be posting them soon.

I just couldn't let Blog Action Day go by completely unmarked...even though I didn't post yesterday. So I thought I'd share an environmentally kind tidbit. I stumbled upon the Low Impact Woodland House several months ago while I was looking for environmentally friendly housing solutions. Who wouldn't want to live in this little parcel of heaven?

Back to my reality with a thud! It's been work, work, work since I returned from celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving with our family. I was reminded to give thanks in so many ways...including giving thanks that the two thousand dollar car repair we incurred didn't prevent our trip or cost even more...Ah the joys of free wheeling down the highway!
